Antigua
”Windward Islands, Caribbean”

Pristine Yachting helps you plan your once-in-a-lifetime, dream sailing holidays with a yacht charter in Antigua! Encircled by white, sandy beaches and rich coral reefs, Antigua is one of the two major islands within the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua’s legendary and romantic yachting capital of the Caribbean is a popular arrival post for many a trans-Atlantic passage, including the annual Talisker Whisky Atlantic (Rowing) Challenge. However, Antigua is best known for its wealth of classical and superyachts, nestled within Nelsons Dockyard at English Harbour and the neighbouring Falmouth Harbour – a popular window-shopping opportunity for tourists and yachties alike. At the 18th-century Naval Dockyard, you can enjoy the Dockyard Museum within the marina or take a hike up to the former military lookout, Shirley Heights, for a spectacular panoramic view.

Elsewhere on the island, you’ll find luxurious resort clubs, beachfront hotels, villas, the friendly and welcoming Jolly Harbour, a chance to swim with stingrays at Sting Ray City or sail north to the low-lying sandbar island of Barbuda to enjoy the untouched, unspoilt beauty of its long pristine white-sand beaches. There’s so much to enjoy at these magical destinations!

The V.C. Bird International Airport is internationally served from the United States, U.K., Europe, etc. You should be able to take a direct flight to Antigua, but failing that, you’ll be able to find regular connecting short-haul flights from any of the other Caribbean islands. Book your sailing adventure in Antigua with Pristine Yachting, the yacht charter concierge for once-in-a-lifetime, bespoke sailing vacations!

The Weather

Antigua is considered the capital and centre of sailing and yachting, especially throughout the Caribbean and is internationally renowned for good reasons. The island of Antigua offers superb protection from the trade winds throughout the year, particularly in English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour on hard, fixed docks, mooring lines and deepwater protected bays. In Antigua, you’ll typically follow a circular route around the island, of which there are many reefs, hazards and submerged rocks to consider. Great attention must be paid to the charts and good planning before departure, particularly to the north, south-west and eastern areas.

The best time to cruise Antigua is typically through the winter months, beginning in November until April/May; you will enjoy consistent easterly trade winds between 10-25 knots, day in and day out, and it’s rare to see harsh weather and sky darkening storms, so you can more or less predict the weather each day, and the temperatures will usually sit between 28C to 32C. Be careful during stronger trade winds and monitor forecasts, as the Atlantic swells can be considerable and punishing when exposed on the East of Antigua, such as towards Green Island and Nonsuch Bay.

If you wish to travel further afield to Barbuda to the North or the French Island of Guadeloupe to the South, please plan your passage according to the weather forecasts and consider your return journey. These can be long passages of 6 to 10 hours. The French island of St Martin is 12 to 15 hours in a Westerly direction but don’t forget; you must head back into the trade winds for your return journey.
