How affordable is sailing?

Have you always wanted to go on a sailing holiday or sailing adventure but stopped... thinking this was a sport or past-time reserved solely for the rich and wealthy?
Not so long ago you may have been right but now sailing for fun as a hobby or on a dream sailing adventure is more affordable than ever... and we can show you how!
Whether you want to learn to sail, join a yacht to sail with other like-minded travellers or take your friends or family with you, there are options for everyone and you just need help finding them.

Sailing for fun (recreational sealing) has for a long time been a sport that requires a deep wallet. Thankfully, in recent years many new adventures, sailing businesses and opportunities have arisen, making sailing for all walks of travellers from first-time sailors, amateurs, couples and groups of all sizes affordable and not just possible, but easy, low-cost and incredibly popular. To show you how this is possible, we've demonstrated a number of options across the different ways to enjoy sailing below.

Sailing for the first-time?

It has has been a common misconception for decades, that yachting and sailing is a sport reserved for the higher echelons and very wealthy, much like skiing was back in the day. This is no longer true and the fact is - today it's quite the opposite! Sailing most definitely is and can be affordable for any holidaymaker, whether you are on a budget of €500 or €20,000. There are affordable options for everyone. So, instead of booking the easy option in an all-inclusive hotel for the week... why not embark on a once in a lifetime, dream sailing adventure?

Picture this. As a solo traveller, couple or group you can spend 7-days on a sailing adventure of your wildest dreams! You probably didn't think it was possible? Living onboard, waking up in a new location every morning and diving into the ocean, exploring secret, secluded bays and anchorages each day, swimming ashore and exploring beautiful, breath-taking islands, snorkelling crystal clear, emerald waters, bathing on beautiful beaches and discovering lost and magical caves. All of this and more, based on a similar budget that you would otherwise spend in a hotel.

Don't believe us? Well, it's a fact.... and we can show you.

How affordable sailing is determined by a number of factors, such as;

– The size and age of the yacht
– If you book a private yacht and how many you share with
– If you book a single cabin on a shared yacht
– The time of year e.g. high season or low season
– The sailing destination and departure point
– If you hire crew and other optional extras

Importantly, we need to make sure your chosen destination is suited to your group, sailing experience and will include everything that you want out of your once in a lifetime adventure at sea.

As an amateur or first-time sailor it’s likely you aren’t aware of the sheer quantity of options available.

This can be a daunting and overwhelming experience.

Solo Travellers - Is it a thing?

The Perks of Solo Travel

Travelling in groups can be limiting. From trying to accommodate the work schedules of everyone involved, the different types of holidays available, your budgets and choosing a destination. Then you arrive and you can’t do and see the things you want. Sometimes that gets in the way of fulfilling what you really want to achieve during your precious time away. For others, travelling solo is the ultimate freedom, a chance to get away, relax and potentially meet and engage with people that you would otherwise not have the chance to meet. Some would even consider solo travelling the perfect way to discover your chosen destination because you are the only one to choose what you want to see or do. Spending some time alone is a reliable way to get to know yourself, your own desires and to test your resourcefulness. A solo trip can be a powerful, life-changing experience.

DID YOU KNOW that 72% of women in the US have taken a solo vacation. Solo travel was the #1 trend for 2019 according to Klook Travel and there was a 131% increase in the number of Google searches online for ‘solo travel’ between 2016 and 2019. One in six people (15%) of us have already taken a holiday alone.

The world of sailing not only suits and welcomes solo travelling but embraces it. Hiring a whole yacht out by yourself is a tall order and even if you are a professional sailor or race-crew, handling, manoeuvring and parking a yacht solo is difficult. There are hundreds of yachts and yacht charter sailing companies offering ‘Cabin-Charter’, otherwise known as booking ‘By-The-Cabin’.

What is a Cabin Charter?

‘Cabin Charter’ sailing means to book a private cabin all to yourself on a shared yacht with an en-suite or shared bathroom. The options range from 35ft to 64ft in length and above, of all shapes and sizes and will have at least a Captain on board – but sometimes a Chef too! Whether it’s a self-catering trip or you are wined and dined by your professional crew, you will enjoy all the luxuries and amenities of the yacht; sailing and getting involved, helming the wheel, learning from the crew and assisting with maneuverers, all of the onboard water sports equipment and more – all on a pre-prepared sailing itinerary (as advertised) to avoid any clash of opinion.

What are the options?

There are 18 to 35’s sailing trips, joining a group of likeminded travellers; a mixture of solo travellers, pairs and small groups onboard, joining a flotilla of other yachts.
