Space, Comfort & Stability

What is a "Catamaran"?

What is a "Catamaran"?

A Catamaran sailing vessel is the ultimate option for the sailor who seeks increased comfort, safety and space, with a less intense, more relaxed living environment that is friendly and more easily accessible for children, the elderly and passengers with disabilities.  Unlike the monohull, Catamarans don’t heel to the wind, offering maximum stability at sea, which is the perfect choice for those seeking a sailing experience without the “rails to the water” adrenaline and un-stowed belongings finding their way across cabins.

Space & Design

Catamaran yachts are multi-hulled, one to port and starboard, with the main body of the hull bridging the gap.  With an abundance of space on-deck, particularly towards the bow and in the aft-cockpit area, there are many places to kick back and relax while you enjoy a pleasant day of sailing.

Comfort

Catamarans excel for comfort with minimal rolling at anchor and at the mooring or under way, with the wind on the beam.  You will enjoy wider, more spacious cabins with ensuite bathrooms and a large communal living area with panoramic views of your surroundings.

Features

Some other exciting benefits you will enjoy include an improved work-space for handling the lines under sail, trampoline netting at the bow to experience the sea rushing by and visibility whilst anchoring, easier access for swimming and a hydraulic platform or davits for hoisting the tender at the stern, rather than towing or raising it onto the bow.

Safety

Greater care must be taken whilst sailing in heavier winds, so it is important to understand the limitations of the vessel and observe the correct reefing guidelines (to reduce the sail area!) – these can always be found in the operators manual.  Catamaran yachts don’t heel like the monohull, a physical response to the power in the sails. Instead, on a catamaran your first sign could be a mechanical breakage such as a broken pulley or torn sail.

Manoeuvrability

Catamarans have two independent engines, propellers and rudders which can be controlled individually at the helm station.  Forward on the port engine and astern on starboard will bring you into a clockwise 360° turn.  For navigating busy anchorages, marinas and parking the yacht this is a Captain’s dream, allowing a little more room for error and manoeuvrability.  A blessing on the calmest days and a saviour when things get interesting!

– The number one choice for space, comfort and increased safety
– Child and elderly-friendly, better suited for disabilities
– Well suited for larger group, parties, weddings
– A much shallower draft for anchoring and entering shallow waters
– Independent throttles for both engines, great manueuverability
– Panoramic views of your surroundings from the saloon
– Wider, taller, more spacious cabins
– Cabins more private due to being further apart
– Increased likelihood of en-suite bathrooms
– More above deck space for sunbathing, relaxing and water-sports storage
– Easier access for dinghy storage, and embarking/disembarking
– No heeling whilst under sail, no matter the wind speed
– More working space, usually, for managing the rigging lines
– Not as important to stow everything away before getting underway

Things to watch out for

– Lacks the adrenaline of a heeling monohull
– Price per ‘ft’ more  than an equivalent length monohull
– Marinas and docking more expensive, due to taking twice the space
– Increased windage on the beam with higher freeboard
– Less keel / draught in the water means increased drift
– Reliant on crew and good communications to assist with parking due to reduced visibility at the helm
– Cannot sail closer than 45-50 degrees to the wind
