"Be your own Captain..."
What is a “Bareboat Yacht Charter?”
Bareboat yacht charter means hiring the yacht and taking responsibility for the command, navigation and legal side yourself, without hiring a professional Captain. It’s the perfect escape for friends, families and couples to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the raw beauty of the ocean, the breath-taking coasts and beautiful island chains that the worlds best sailing destinations have to offer.
If you are new or have never been sailing before on a yacht then this option is most likely not for you, and we would recommend looking into hiring a Captain. We can help you with this.
Alternatively, you can look into qualifying as a certified Captain yourself. Internationally, the most recognised minimum requirement courses are;
– ICC (International Certificate of Competence for Pleasure Craft)
– RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Day Skipper with the ICC top-up
– ASA (American Sailing Association) 103/104
All of these qualifications have two elements, a Theoretical and Practical.
What do I need to charter a yacht myself – as Captain?
Most charter agencies these days require charterers to have at least one certified RYA Day Skipper or equivalent, and often one other experienced crew-member or RYA Competent Crew (or equivalent).
This is for insurance purposes but more importantly, to ensure you have crew with at least the basics skills and experience to handle the yacht and the onboard equipment, in close quarters, strong winds and when things get interesting. Additionally, it’s important to understand the laws and rules of navigation and weather forecasting, to be proficient at anchoring and doing so safely and securely, and in emergency situations such as basic mechanical failures, a man overboard situation and generally, how to behave and operate safely at sea and keep the crew in good standing.
